The excavation is followed by the treatment, curation and study of the bones, which take place in the laboratory. The lab features all necessary infrastructure and technological equipment for specialised analyses. Like in every science, here too particular research protocols are applied.
The bones are very carefully removed from the ground. The anthropologist determines the removing method, based on the preservation conditions.
The least invasive methods are applied for the cleaning and preservation of the bones. Generally, soft brushes are used for dry or wet cleaning. Hard-shell sediments are removed with ultrasonic devices.
Only the heavily worn bones are impregnated with consolidants, in order to be preserved intact. The bones that are intended for isotope and ancient DNA analyses are not treated with any chemicals.
Each skeleton that enters the Lab obtains a unique identification number. All information is registered in databases.
Each skeleton is photographically documented, while in specific cases, three-dimensional digital models are created.
